Anybody who knows me knows that I like music - of all types. I particularly like making music - especially swing and dixieland.
Back in May, I was asked to MC the annual spring concert of the Highlands Festival Singers. Our director, Melissa Stephens had arranged for another act to play a couple of sets on the program in order give the choir a bit of a break. This act consisted of Walter Tose, a math teacher at the high school, playing guitar and Greg Hamilton, a former student of Melissa's, playing piano.
Every once in a while, you get a really pleasant surprise. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but Walter and Greg were about 16 bars into their first song and I realized this guy on piano is really good !
After the weekend's concerts, I checked out Greg's website (http://www.thefreekeys.ca/). Wendy's daughter, Devon, manages a pub down in the Newmarket area (St Alban's in Holland Landing) and I thought that Greg's solo repertoire would be a great fit for Devon's Friday night crowd. So I told Devon how good I thought Greg was, and she contacted him and set up a gig for this past Friday night.
Wendy and I went down to the pub on Friday and had dinner and hung around for Greg's show. What a great time ! Lots of great Billy Joel tunes and a lot of other classic rock stuff. The guy amazes me ... great sense of humour, reads his audience well, good crowd interaction. I thoroughly enjoyed myself !
I only hope our crowd didn't convince April to never attend one of Greg's shows again.
